On Roe v. Wade
SRC members and friends,
Our church has always confessed the biblical truth that all persons are made in God’s image and are to be treated with humble love, wide mercy, and just protection from the womb to the end of life. Loving God and loving our neighbor expresses that essential truth.
For this reason, we give thanks for the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. We are also mindful that this is a painful and divisive issue, one that impacts many in greatly varying ways. We are praying earnestly for our country and for all in government, and most especially for you, our members, as you process the decision.
SRC has consistently sought to care for the most marginalized and vulnerable, especially moms and newborns. We will not only continue this work but also seek to strengthen that service in every way we can. Jesus sought to protect women from their abusers, moving toward the vulnerable with compassion and kindness, and we will seek to follow him in that good work.
While gratitude can and should be expressed, we must also be mindful that many will feel fear and might even wonder if their church is here for them in their pain. We are here, and we love all of our members, earnestly desiring that we may serve each in our journey with Christ. If you feel uncertain about what Scripture teaches about this, or how the Gospel can shape our past experiences of pain, or current fear and despair, we invite you to reach out with a call or email. Our Pastors and Women’s Ministry leaders, together with our Counseling Center staff, are available to serve you.
To those who simply rejoice in the decision, make sure that you respond not with triumphant high fives but with humble bent knees and renewed dedication to caring for all in crisis, generously opening your heart, home, and resources to all who suffer. We are in this together with joy, with prayer, and with trust in God who is the Author of Life.
